Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)

All Hertfordshire councils, including Welwyn Hatfield, will be undergoing significant transformation through Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and devolution.

The current plans involve Welwyn Hatfield, Stevenage, North Herts and parts of Hertfordshire County Council combining to create a new Central Hertfordshire Unitary Authority.

These changes aim to enhance the delivery of services for the public and bring decision-making closer to our residents.

When will this happen?

It is expected that Welwyn Hatfield will continue to operate until March/April 2028 when the new Central Hertfordshire Unitary Authority will be created.

How will this affect employees?

Most Welwyn Hatfield employees will be transferred under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations (TUPE) to the new unitary authorities, ensuring your employment rights are protected and continuity maintained.

Whilst aspects of some roles may evolve during the transition, the overall aim is to maintain continuity and protect employees’ rights under TUPE regulations.

How will this affect recruitment?

Recruitment will continue as normal throughout the transition period.
